Frigid darkness crept into the chamber, but it was welcome. “Zzsss.” Without a body, without a soul, the shape formed from the blackest night could scarcely communicate. But it had creative ways to form sounds from subtle changes in air, giving it a whispery voice.
The cavern was illuminated from the floor by a blue-white glow. The pale pool cast its moonlit magic upward, lighting the only corporeal figure in the chamber. His skin no longer carried a healthy pink, his hair long surrendered for his craft. More beast than human now, beady gray eyes lifted toward the shadow. “And?”
The shadow wavered in place, fearing the glowing light the Master used, “Sssshe issss no longer a problem.”
Teeth that had been filed into pitted points filled the Master’s cruel smile. “Then it is time.”

The young handmaiden hurried out the door, shutting it quietly behind her. Within the circle of her arms, she carried a basket filled with fragrant soaps. Not a one had been touched tonight. Her boss, the plump Lady Courtney scolded the mousy haired girl, “You came back with ALL the soaps? What a foolish child!”
The handmaiden was new, but certainly not a fool. “The Queen is out of sorts, m’lady.” She wasn’t afraid of Lady Courtney, but the woman could fire her in a heartbeat. “Angry, tis true! I have never seen her express hardly an emotion but just now she was furious.”
“Nonsense!” Lady Courtney hissed. “Nothing would upset the Queen of Auvrynon. Now get back to work in the kitchens for the night. Give me those soaps.”
The handmaiden turned over the basket and with a perfectly polite curtsey, she departed.
Alone in the hall, Lady Courtney eyed the tall, lavish door that lead to the Queen’s very private bedchambers. Perhaps, she thought, best to err with caution. Angry Queens are best not to be bothered.

The night was clear and beautiful above the City of Gates, perfectly serene, until the first star fell. The tiny rock flared red across the sky, super-heated by the atmosphere, and struck the ground a little way outside the city with tremendous force, leaving a small crater. Hearing the impact, people emerged from their homes, stepping out just in time to see dozens more or the strange stones blaze towards the ground, landing all around the city and into the nearby sea. Some punched holes through roofs, while the heat from others caused small fires, but by and large, the mysterious hail of pebbles seemed to cause little trouble.
