They have a tapered, snake-like muzzle with a hardened layer much like a beak, a long flexible neck, two wings ending in claws, two powerful legs with large, clawed gripping feet, and a long narrow tail. From muzzle to tail-tip they are covered with brilliant green hair-like feathers on the top, and white feathers on the under-jaw, throat, belly and underside of the tail.. Combat:
Only known to attack large creatures when their communal nesting sites are threatened, avidia do so by clinging to the intruder with either wing or foot claws, while raking with claws not being used for holding on, and biting at throat and face. They may also swoop and strike with claws or wings at the face of the intruder, or dive and try to snatch at them with hind claws. Habitat/Society:
In late summer, fall and winter avidia are solitary, spreading out over the mountains and foothills they prefer. But from spring to mid-summer, they gather in flocks, numbering up to 20 individuals, to form a communal nesting site high on a cliff, hatch their eggs and raise the flightless, featherless newborns into adult, independent avidia, all by mid-summer. At mid-summer, they all separate again. Avidia live to be no more than 10 years old, can reproduce the year after they are hatched, and lay from 1-3 eggs per nesting. As adults, they are never more than three feet long, half of which is tail. Ecology:
Preferring a diet of insects and small animals, avidia are purely carnivorous. They frequently live near sweet-scented fruit trees, swamps and marshes to hunt the insects and small animals common to these areas. |
