Resembling a wingless dragon, these lizards average 25 feet long as adults. Darkflame skin is dark burgundy-red with brighter crimson on the underside. The head is heavy, skin thick and pebbled. Eyes are usually dark green or brown-yellow, and spikes protrude along the top of the tail. They are naturally hot to the touch, and when angered an 'aura' of flame appears around the head and jaws.

Combat:
Darkflame Lizards are almost never encountered wild. Although a few have escaped their drow owners and spread out through the underdark, they are impossibly rare. Usually they are encountered with drow mounted on them, and when commanded to attack, do so by either biting and holding while they lash the opponent with their barbed tail, or combine the bite with a 10 foot long cone of white-hot flame-breath, which they can aim with lethal precision. This flame exits the mouth of the lizard as a narrow shaft, then broadens at two feet long before narrowing again to a finely pointed, blue-hot tip.

Mating occurs every ten months, with the females producing 1-2 eggs three weeks later. Eggs are laid near lava pools, as they require the heat to hatch; which they do after another five weeks. The female has no interest in the eggs after they are laid, and will promptly leave them. The young lizards are independent at birth, reaching full size and breeding maturity at three years of age. They eat a diet primarily comprised of rothe, fire toad and osquip, although they are perfectly happy to eat anything else they can catch.

Darkflame Lizards are a cross between Fire Lizards and Subterranean Lizards, bred by the drow of Cress d'Chath to specially suite the volcanically active region they live in. They exist almost exclusively in the area of the drow city, and their primary diet is of foods provided by the drow.
