Description:
Fire Mares are large, stocky elementals with the appearance of equines. They come in all the shades of flame, from deep sooty black to brilliant pale blue, but the most common colors are shades of red. Mane and tail are either the same color as the coat, or whatever shade would appear in slightly cooler flame than that of the coat-color. Hooves are usually either the color of the mane and tail, or coal black. The breath of a fire mare is smoke.

Combat:
Attacking with both sharp front hooves and a nasty fanged bite, Fire Mares also use a short, hot burst of flame breath from mouth and nostrils. The smoke of their breath can reduce visibility in a confined area, confusing and choking an opponent. Invariably angry at being forced into the Primary plane, they will attack anything at any given opportunity. On the Elemental plane of Fire, they usually only attack if harassed or if they have an advantage of numbers over their opponent, who may well become prey.

Habitat/Society:
There are no Fire Stallions; the race is entirely female. Fire Mares breed with Salamanders. They produce twin flamefoals every ten years, which reach breeding maturity after another ten years. The life span of a single mare is measured in centuries. They travel on the Plane of Fire in herds that range from 5 to 50 members, but are susceptible to entrapment by Pyromancers, who use fire magic to summon the mares to the Primary Plane as mounts.

Ecology:
Fire Mares usually eat burning coals, although they will take any safe opportunity they find to supplement this diet with flesh. On the Plane of Fire, they are both prey and predator, fitting well into the harsh environment of the temperamental flame creatures.
