Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Description: Azure Servals, also known as "Kittens of Lanya" are blue-grey lynx-like hunters believed by some to be sacred to the Incourtian goddess of night and lust. The Gunn-Quenya clansmen around the city of Fleetcliffe venerate them, and it is said that he who kills one will never be able to sleep or make love for the rest of his or her life. In turn, the Servals do not attack the half-elven Gunn-Quenya clan and will even, at times, help them to repel common enemies. The Servals are originally from Suza, the long-lost realm where Prince Minou D'Incourt was born. At the marriage of his parents, a Gunn-Quenyarin sorceress and the Crown Prince of Suza, Emperor Lenezor XII of Suza brought with him as a present to the isle sixty of these cats, who were released into the Northern wild. They have now been on Incourt for about one hundred and twenty years, despite one attempt to have them all culled by Siso the Majestic. (The executioners he sent soon refused to continue, tormented by insomnia and impotency.) Combat:
On the rare occasions when they are attacked, Servals are entirely capable of defending themselves. If they come up against a more powerful foe, they will often fade away into the night and rush, under the protection of invisibility, to somewhere where they are safe. Servals rarely attack themselves unless severely provoked, or in the defense of the Gunn-Quenyans. Their claws are more usually used for hunting. Habitat/Society:
Servals generally hunt alone, there being two exceptions to this rule. When a male and female are mating, they hunt together and share each other's kills until the female is pregnant. The male then guards her until her kittens are born, and finally leaves. The second exception, of course, is a mother with cubs. She protects them and provides meat for them until they are mature. A male's territory includes minor territories of females, these being his usual "wives." When he is old, he will have difficulty defending his domain against younger males and may be driven off. Unusually among big cats, however, once superseded an old male is always treated with respect by his conquerors, and even allowed to keep a small territory for the closing years of his life. When a particularly renowned Serval of either gender dies, there is a "funeral", as all the nearby cats surround the body, roaring in a final tribute before leaving it. The corpses of Servals are never left to rot, but picked up and burnt with honour by the Gunn-Quenya in the area. Ecology:
Servals usually live to about 45 years at most. They hunt deer and hare, which are never sparce on the moors and heaths around Fleetcliffe. |
