Depending on their environment they can be one of two colors. Forest - a sickly purple color, rocky areas - an almost fecal shade of brown. They always travel in small packs that can have up to 6 Larkens at once. They have been known to gather together about once a year and roam around attacking any civilized area they come across. Larkens can be passed off as a type of humanoid. They can walk and run on their back legs and can even fight. Their tails usually end at their ankles when standing upright. Most of their tails are tipped with 4 or six small but deadly spikes. At the end of each hand and foot are long, sharp claws that can easily rip through flesh and possibly penetrate armor. Larkens are often encountered when someone is near their territory or when they go out hunting for food. Combat:
Larkens always travel in small packs ranging from 4 - 8 at one time. This gives them an advantage over other predators they encounter and sometimes even adventurers. If they get into a fight they cannot win, one of the Larkens will flee to gather reinforcements while the rest stay to fight. Larkens only have two strategies that are used over and over and one that is used when all else fails or they are successful in a larger scale attack. The most common one is to simply charge in on all fours with teeth bared and ready to rip something apart and then later, bring the claws into the deal. They are smart enough however to block things like swords and clubs with their claws and counter with their tails. The other one is when they are going to attack a village or small town. They will gather as many larkens as possible and surround the place they are going to attack and wait until night before silently stalking in and attacking any armed people first before going after the others. If the people in the village start to flee, they will do their best to herd the fleeing people in one direction where more larkens are in wait. That strategy can also be used in small fights that they begin to lose. Habitat/Society:
Larkens have almost the same society wolves do. They stick together in packs and if they find a steady source of food like a herd of deer or something they will be guaranteed to follow it until they kill every one of them. When that happens they simply move on. If nothing can be found though, they will often fight to eat each other. The dominant larken of the packs are usually easy to pick out, since they are often the largest of their group or the fiercest fighter. Or perhaps it's the one with the most scars, or the biggest teeth. Larken never stay in one place for long since they are always on the move to follow a source of food. Or the ones who do stay in one spot usually have a steady source of resources coming to them. These are the ones who are the most dangerous because once they are settled in, they are not going to leave and a colony starts to form. A fully grown colony can have up to 300 larkens and that is never a good thing. The young are usually taken care of by their mothers until they reach about one year old and then they are left to fend for themselves. Ecology:
The average lifespan of a larken is 30 years. It could be higher but they are often killing each other or getting killed by hunters and adventurers for their scales. They will take care of their environment because they need it for their survival. If they establish a colony, it will usually be in an area able to support their constant living there. If possible it will be made in large caves or in abandoned mines. There have been cases where they will attack mines that are being used by people for their colony. |
