The darker side of unicorns, and they are all female. The color of blood, they are said to only be spotted on the red moon. A very powerful symbol for witches and their familiars, it isn't too hard to understand why they have such magical talents. Smaller than a regular horse, they aren't quite the size of a pony. Long legged and limber, they are a refined species.

Combat:
A confrontation with this beast can not be expected, nor can it usually be remembered. Choosing to flee rather than taint their delicate images, they aren't much for combat. But on the rare occasion that escape becomes impossible, they will defend themselves.

Magic attacks are primarily their choice for defense. With an entire realm of shadows at their beck and call, they will summon force guardians. Usually the lesser of the shadow world is called forth because the weaker of the magic is easier to control. But a particularly bold Nightmare might not hestiate to test her power, being the black sheep.

If Magic is not an option, as a very last resort, they will use their horn and hooves to their best defense, trampling and piercing with all that is in them. For death is an unknown fear to them, strange and scary.

Habitat/Society:
Nightmares are said to live in the sky, making the very clouds themselves a home, but no one really knows where a nightmare goes when it wants to rest. All we know is people have seen them on rare occasions. It is believed they are a warm blooded race, needing a moderate temperature to be comfortable.

As there aren't very many Nightmares, most of them live life alone, seeking companionship only once every ten years to spawn foals. This is not to say they are unsocialable, that is quite the opposite. Nightmares keep a variety of company with any number of sky foul or ground animal. But to see two nightmares together is a very rare sight indeed, but not completely impossible.

With no natural preditors, collectors are obviously in the top ten most dangerous enemies. Among their enemies, strangely enough are the Masterfree. For centuries these races have been engaged in battle, killing and slaughtering each other. But now, they can't even remember what the original conflict was over; all of them know the hatred they have for the Masterfree.

Ecology:
Even though they are a completely female race, they still have children, anywhere from one to three. In order for this to be possible, they must breed outside their race. One race in particular is called Masterfree, though there are many others. Because of the mixed genes, there are no pure breed Nightmares, at least, not anymore. While all the foals do resemble each other, they all have unique abilities. Nightmares mature very slowly, but right when they are born, their wings are ready to function. Curious by nature, they also have a cautious side that keeps them from walking into the face of danger.

A nightmare will never forsake her daughters. They are her life, and vice versa. But until a childe matures it doesn't have a reasoning for defense. Unfortunately, if a mother dies defending her children, this often means the daughters are slaughtered as well. A family will stay together as long as possible, mother and daughters, but most never live to see a few years after giving birth.
