Description:
Refene can get as big as a wild hare, matted fur with nasty red eyes. Their mouths hang open and blood soaks in puddles over their tongues and teeth. Vicious, feverish creatures, they scamper with rabid-like speed, consuming anything and everything in their path. They are a disease.

Refene Familiars can be just about anything such as: smaller wolves, stray cats, frogs, squirrels and mice; some have even claimed to see monkeys and birds. Though the Refene Familiars may branch into all different species, they do have one thing in common, the Refene's terrible hunger for flesh and blood. This can clearly be seen, reflected in their eyes and mouths. Teeth are said to grow at least twice as long; while eyes are said to take on an unnatural red glow.

Combat:
There are no rules when it comes to the Refene. Like a plague they swarm upon their victims, feeding and turning, increasing the sickness buried beneath Auvrynon. Though several may be slain, hundreds will come to claim blood. With enough bites, even a humaniod could become undead, and there is no known cure.

Rumors speak of the over sized Refene, saying they actually seem able to mental control the smaller ones. But these are just the words of insane ravers. No offical discovery had ever been made of Refene bigger than ordinary rats. Refene Familiars, on the other hand, can be a force to confront. Just as mindless and chaotic as the Refene themselves, they attack without mercy.

Habitat/Society:
Mostly warm, foul places seem to attract these creatures. Moisture would seem to play a key part in their survival as well. Not only found in the sewers, they always make their homes in rotting forests, and stale swamps. An important second in their survival is a fresh source of meat. Without one, their race will die out, though it may take several years, perhaps tens of years depending on the size of the pack.

Ecology:
Born or turned, it rarely seems to matter among Refene. They are all carriers of the undead disease, given immortality as long as their undead hearts still pump the virus through their bodies. The only time they are ever birthed is if a newly turned creature happened to be pregnant themselves.

Infant Refene are spawned to be on their own, sometimes being born in the middle of battle, their mothers cares not. They will either die or open their blood red eyes, ready to make their first kill. Amazingly when a Refene childe is born, provided it survives, the creature will instantly grow to full size.

In some of the wilder breeds of Refene, found outside cities, they have been known to recruit other small animals to their forces. Rapid like the rest of them, these other animals or rodents fight with the same determination as the rest of the pack, becoming just like them, thus referred to as Refene Familiar.
