Fur is silver-gray with black points and mask. Eyes may be blue, green, or yellow. They are carnivores, hunting primarily birds, faerie mice, and baby feather boas. Combat:
Batcats will attack a medium or large creature only if they or their kittens are threatened. Small creatures may be attacked for food. They usually swoop and rake with their front claws, but may secure a grip with the front claws while biting and raking with both hind legs. They may also use their wings to strike at eyes and face, in an effort to blind and confuse their opponent. Habitat/Society:
Mildly territorial, the females go into season at least once each year. The distinctive hyper-sonic cries at this time attract males, which posture and squabble until one is chosen by the female. Three months later, she gives birth to a litter of 2-4 batkittens, who remain with her until they are eight months old. After this, the kittens go their own way, in search of their own territories. Batcats build their nests in hollow tree-trunks or shallow caverns. Two that meet in the woods are more likely to socialize briefly, then part ways, then to fight. They are not naturally aggressive toward each other. Ecology:
Batcats are occasionally preyed on by other predators, the main predator being adult feather boas. At one time they were not uncommon in other areas of Rosha, but a virulent disease decimated all but the breeding population living in the secluded confines of Tol Ithil. Although the disease has died out, there are no longer any batcats beyond the blueblack walls of Hartsaiz. |
