Each dew-drop that falls from where it gathered changes into a pale green shimmer, no more than two inches tall and either nude or dressed in a wisp of green mist. Regardless, they are completely sexless. Small round wings let the fly briefly, although they can't go far from their birth-point. Combat:
A dew shimmer has no concept of combat, but if attacked they will use their natural ability to become clear as water to try and hide from the aggressor. They cannot defend themselves other than to vanish. Habitat/Society:
The delicate, fey shimmer is a creature that can appear anywhere that wild magic mixes with fresh-gathered morning dew, and as they are the product of random magic in addition to being sexless, they are completely unable to reproduce. In the brief time they have to exist, they gather into mindlessly joyful groups, dancing and spinning for the sheer pleasure of existing, their every motion singing of happiness and simplicity, although they themselves are voiceless. Ecology:
Dew shimmers seem to fill no niche in nature; they are little more than animated dew, so the only thing likely to eat one is a thirsty lizard. Cats quickly learn not to pounce on them, unless they want a splash of dew in the face as they connect. The shimmers eat nothing. In fact, the only thing they seem to produce is joy in life. And such a brief life... for the first caressing rays of the sun's warmth to touch them is a kiss of death, drying them up as though they were never there. |
