Eyes may be blue, green, yellow, or combinations thereof. They are carnivores, hunting primarily birds, mice, squirrels and young snakes. They are particularly popular in cities, where they are used to keep bird populations down - particularly pigeons. The forest varieties are larger than the grassland varieties, approaching the size of a lynx. Combat:
Fluttercats will attack a medium or large creature only if they or their kittens are threatened. Small creatures may be attacked for food. They usually swoop and rake with their front claws, but may secure a grip with the front claws while biting and raking with both hind legs. They may also use their wings to strike at eyes and face, in an effort to blind and confuse their opponent. Habitat/Society:
Mildly territorial, the females go into season at least once each year. The distinctive persistent yowling cries at this time attract males, which fight over the right of breeding the female. More than one male can breed the same female. Three months later, she gives birth to a litter of 2-4 flutterkittens, who remain with her until they are eight months old. After this, the kittens go their own way, in search of their own territories. Fluttercats build their nests in tall grasses and brush. They are not naturally aggressive toward each other except when breeding. Ecology:
Fluttercats are occasionally preyed on by other predators, the main aggressors being hawks and eagles. Highly adaptable, they can live nearly anywhere there is civilized habitation, just like any wingless cat. |
