However, one thing is constant - despite the extravagance of their coloring and markings, they invariably blend into their surroundings incredibly well. They resemble a poison dart frog with rubbery wings that can be used for short flights and gliding. Combat:
Although the flying frog is incapable of attacking anything larger than a fly, it will if attacked strike at the aggressor's eyes with its long, sticky tongue, trying to blind. The skin secretes strong poisons that can be deadly just from contact with skin, not requiring an open wound to be effective. Habitat/Society:
Flying frogs are not actively territorial, but they tend to scatter over a wide area to find food. In early spring they gather in hollows high in the trees, where water has accumulated into ponds in the bark, to lay their eggs. The eggs are then abandoned to hatch, and due to the poisonous nature of the frogs, rarely disturbed by predators. Ecology:
Flying frogs are very good at keeping insect populations down. They are also occasionally kept in aquariums for decoration, due to the flamboyant coloring. The skin produces a very potent poison that is popular with some assassins and barbarian tribes. The only animal known to hunt them are the feather boas of Tol Ithil, that seem to have developed an immunity to the frogs poison. |
