Found in all the widely varied colors of the horses they resemble, the horsefly also sports two large, colorful butterfly-like wings. They are no larger than a squirrel when full-grown.

Combat:
If at all possible, horseflies will flee rather than fight. If unable to flee, they paw at their assailant with both front legs, bite, and kick with both hind legs together.

Habitat/Society:
Horseflies live in herds, usually from 5-20 females with 1-3 adult males. However, there have been reports of the gathering into groups with as many as 200 individuals during the breeding season. During this time, males put on extravagant displays of flying skill, and constantly flutter their wings to show off the colors. Females select a single mate, although the same male may be selected by multiple females. Eggs are laid after six weeks, and two weeks after that hatch out tiny foals, which are able to fly and run within two hours of birth.

Ecology:
Horseflies are herbivores, feeding mainly on the seeds and tops of grasses, but are also very fond of fruits, pine-nuts and berries. They are hunted by any predator that can catch them, and particularly by fluttercats.
