Name: Rohan Plains
Location: Eastern Mainlands
Climate: Temperate, with warm, clear summers and cool, snowy winters, fall and spring usually rainy and with the occasional thunderstorm.
Physical Features: The Plains of Rohan are a vast sea of golden and green grasses, with the occasional swatch of oddly colored hybrid in blue, orange, silver or red undulating over low, rolling hills, rippling like water under the caress of the omnipresent wind.
Hidden among the roots of the grasses are innumerable tiny spring fed streams, occasionally flowing together before they dry up to form small, shallow rivers that usually vanish back under the soil before ever reaching the ocean.
On the north the Plains are bordered by the Razorstone River, on the west by the Cathac Forest, on the east by the forests bordering Legaia, and on the south by great Sea of Mists. Where the low hills meet the Sea broad, treacherous mud flats appear at low tide, into which the unwary creature who ventures out onto the apparently firm soil can vanish completely, too be food for the wide array of small tideland crustaceans that reside in the thick, malodorous sludge.
Flora and Fauna: To east and west, the plains give way to rising forest; to the north, trees line the banks of the Razorstone River, and too the south only saltgrass grows along the edges of the mud flats. But in the Plains themselves, What first appears to nothing but grass, hills and wind reveals itself to close inspection. The grasses themselves come in a great variety of shades and textures, from the vicious slash of razorgrass to whispering music from wind through the hollow stems of flutereed. At certain times of the year, the Plains take fire with the minute crimson, orange, blue and yellow blossoms that festoon every plant, and along the banks of the tiny rivers and the larger streams, low-growing, blue-foliaged bushes bear a heavy load of large, tart green berries several times a year, following the bloom of huge silvery-white blossoms that make the bushes resemble nothing quite so much as fragrant snow-drifts. Insects beyond numbering festoon the land, from crickets, spiders, flies, cicadas and ants to scarabs, ground-wasps and centipedes, as well as many that have never been named or, perhaps, even seen by anyone who could give a name to them. In spring, the plains come alive with the music of their chirping, clicking and the hum of wings. Mice, ground-squirrels and other rodents are favored prey of the various species of snake and hawk, while small, brightly plumaged seed and insect eating birds frequently make their nests in the tallest grasses and the berry bushes. Many larger creatures roam the plains, from herds of gazelle, wildebeest and other antelope to zebra, wild horse, the intelligent Meara that so strongly resemble the horses, and the predators that hunt them, such as lion, nomadic human tribes, and grass-wolf.
Known Dangers: Razorgrass, mud flats, lions, grass-wolves, nomad human tribes, and around the borders, bandits driven out of other lands.
Ethnicity/Race: Nomadic barbarian human tribes, Meara, bandit groups.
Language: Numerous tribal dialects, and the language of the Meara, which is mainly non-vocal. Most bandits speak common, and on rare occasions a nomad might be found that can.
Resources: Grain, meat, exotic animal/bird life, shellfish off the mud flats for anyone willing to risk them. Wild horses, and Meara captured young.
Special Facts: Although the soil supports thriving grasses, it is not well suited to farming. The predominant intelligent race that roam the Plains are the Meara, but they are generally discounted as nothing more than wild horses, and are occasionally captured and used as beasts of burden. No adult Meara would accept this slavery, so it is only those captured young that survive the treatment, and frequently mature with no knowledge that they are any different from a mere horse. The average Meara resembles a well-bred arabian horse, and stands between 16 and 17.2 hands in height, with coat color varying from pure white to jet black, and every shade of silver, gray, dapple or grullo in between.
