The hybrid Cathacians of the forest have broken into territorial clans throughout the woods. Known Dangers: A few of the clans attack with no provocation, asking questions only after subduing a perceived threat. Will-o'wisps are known to frequent the more marshy areas around the coast. There is at least one tribe of gnolls in the northern part of the forest, probably more. Ethnicity/Race: Crossbreeds and gnolls, little human life. Language: Various tribal dialects, enough common for the Cathacian clans to trade with Elshallen and others. Resources: Timber, furs Special Facts: The Cathac Forest once had several small villages of humans that had discovered the pristine forest and decided to settle there. The villages disappeared with time and nothing was heard from them for generations afterwards. Legends and rumors escaped the mystery surrounding the origin of the strange hybrids within Cathac Forest. These tales speak of a powerful sorcerer that grew corrupt. This mage once held the love of a woman and together they wed. He magicked a gem for his wife, to keep her safe and it had set in a pendant for her. Unbeknownst to him, Chaos Fyre warped the magic of the gem and his beloved wife changed into a strange combination of a mountain lion and a human as soon as she put the gift on. As much as he wished it, he was not animal and the woman he loved no longer wished his eyes to look upon her, his own magic and that of others failed to restore her to her human form. He followed her to the forest of Cathac. There he found humans beginning to settle the land. Beguiling the leaders of the villages, the sorcerer used his magicks to aide them in small ways thus gaining their trust. Despair darkens the soul and the once good mage changed. He conspired against the people and they found themselves reliving the curse of his beloved. Cries echoed throughout the forest and the beasts within welcomed them with their own. The sorcerer had given his loved one the gift of companionship. Hybrids of every race were spawned and soon lurked in all corners of Cathac Forest. The crossbreeds ranged from wart hogs to the mountain loins and clans shortly sprung up as they claimed territories. Today most of the hospitable Cathacian Clans are willing to trade with traveling merchants. With time a well-traveled path became a well-maintained road through the heart of the forest, thus linking a trade route with the Kingdom of Elshallen beyond. |
