Name: Woods of Gwenethuid
Location: Extending from north to south along the Kessle River through the center of the continent Ceara. Climate: Temperate, with four distinct seasons ranging from cool, in the north, to warm in the south. The extremes of cold and heat are very rare, and cause for discussion among the races dwelling there for years after the fact. Physical Features: Gently rolling lowland hills and valleys, with numerous small streams and brooks adding the music of laughing and chattering water to the deeper murmuring voice of the Kessle. To the north, near the Ameredrin Mountains there are low cliffs and rising foothills, with the occasional shallow cave system worn by the steady coursing of underground springs rising to the surface. Flora and Fauna: Oak is predominant throughout the forest. There are also hickory, alder, birch, ash, basswood, walnut, cherry, apple, plum, maple, blackwood, pine, spruce, red and white cedar. Mule, white- and black-tail deer; gray, marbled, red, sable and kit fox; gray, tiger, giant, ground and flying squirrels; woodchuck, gopher, rabbit, opossum, marten, fisher and salt-fisher, mink, ferret, and racoon among others. Numbered among the bird-life are blue, crested, thunder and ruffed grouse; pileated and loggerhead woodpecker; common, speckled and crimson pheasant; turkey, jays, flickers and sand-flickers, duck, raven, forest falcon, gulls, herons, crows and innumerable species of small songbird. Known Dangers: Thieves and bandits, wolves, dire wolves, bear, forest lion, the rare water wight or small band of goblins venturing down out of the mountains in the north, over-exposure to kender. If threatened, the normally peaceful races of the forest will defend themselves fiercely. Ethnicity/Race: Hobbits, kender, and gnomes are most commonly seen. There are also shy sylvan elves, but they are unsurpassed in wood-skill and rarely let anyone know they are about. Small bands of goblin live in shallow caves in the upper foothills of the Ameredrin Mountains, but they rarely venture far from their lairs. Various other races have made homes for themselves as well, but they usually stay near the harbor city of Farholme. Language: Halfling, gnome, common, elven, a smattering of other dialects in some areas. Resources: Timber, furs, assorted handcrafts from baskets and carvings to fine jewelry and bows, various live animals, cloth, honey, mead, syrup, maple sugar, plums, apples, walnuts. Special Facts: The peoples of the Forest are generally peaceful, curious and fairly shy. It is a land that encourages long stories, friendly contests and rambling walks, rather than combat and violence. However, they love their homeland, and will defend it with unexpected ferocity if there is need. |
