Description:
The average Meara resembles a well-bred arabian horse, and stands between 16 and 17.2 hands in height, with coat color varying from pure white to jet black, and every shade of silver, gray, dapple or grullo in between.

Combat:
If a Meara, its herd or foal are threatened, the entire herd will flee if it is possible to do so without losing any members, and if not, will attack in force, striking with each front hoof and biting, delivering a powerful kick with both hind legs, or rearing up and stomping down with both front hooves to crush an opponent.

Habitat/Society:
Strongly herd oriented, Meara gather in separate female and male groupings. During the spring, mares select the fastest, strongest and most intelligent stallion they can find, frequently one favored stud servicing an entire herd of mares, then remaining nearby to help protect the herd and raise the young Meara for the rest of the year. Bachelor herds usually travel near and protect the mares and foals, but not together. Foals stay with their dam and her herd until they are 4 years old, then either join another mare herd or find a bachelor herd to travel with; they do not remain with the original herd, to reduce the risk of inbreeding. The life span of the average Meara is only 30 years, and they usually have one foal every 2 years, between the ages of 5 and 25. As an herbivore, they are susceptible to the predations of carnivores, and suffer from the raids of bandits and barbarians that don't regard them as intelligent creatures. Although adult Meara would rather die than be enslaved, foals captured young can grow up in captivity without ever realizing they are any different from the animals around them.

Ecology:
The predominant intelligent race of the Rohan Plains, the Meara are generally discounted as nothing more than wild horses, and are occasionally captured and used as beasts of burden. No adult Meara would accept this slavery, so it is only those captured young that survive the treatment, and frequently mature with no knowledge that they are any different from a mere horse. They are, like horses, purely herbivorous grazers and browsers.
