Name: Rikektak Leaders: Flock-chieftain Kairek Type: Tribal nesting grounds, largest of the Dire Corbie Nests. Location: Beneath the southernmost island of the Ring of Fire, just east of the Raging Waters. They have been known to make raids on the surface when food supplies run short underground. Monetary unit: None. Ethnicity/Race: Dire Corbie, no other race is tolerated. Language: A rudimentary racial language. Religion: The only thing the Corbies seem to worship is the thought of their next meal. Climate: Warm and mild, with very little variation. Flora and Fauna: Several species of fungi and lichen flourish near the Nest, fertilized by the detritus of the corbies themselves. They actually encourage this growth, to attract creatures for them to prey on. The Corbies will hunt almost anything, and as a result there are few other creatures in the areas around the Nest. Although they have figured out that the lush growths of plant life draw prey, they are not intelligent enough to capture the animals drawn and breed them for a steady supply of food. Instead they tend to kill them and gorge. However, there is one species that even the Corbies can’t kill or drive off; in the tunnels around the Nest, several Noran live and hunt. The Corbies have little defense against these stone-firing creatures, which resemble nothing more than gnarled, petrified tree-stumps. Known Dangers: The obvious main dangers are Corbies and Norans. Most of the other races normally encountered in the Underdark tend to avoid the nesting sites, since even if they have nothing to fear from the Corbies, getting attacked continuously can get annoying. Not to mention make you late for whatever you are traveling to. History: Dire Corbies are huge, bipedal birds common in the southern reaches of the upper Underdark. Believed to have descended from the avian creator race that also spawned the aarakocra, these neutral evil subterranean birdmen were driven nearly to extinction in a centuries-long war with giant bats. Unable to fly, they are still strong, ferocious fighters, and always attack to the death. They have two arms ending in sharp, hard claws, and invariably hunt in flocks, usually while shrieking the popular war-cry ‘Doom! Doom!’. Why they are so fond of this phrase is unknown. |
