Structure Type: It has the appearance of a medieval, English Cathedral. It is therefore made of stone with ornate stained glass windows. About The Cathedral: The Cathedral of Hope is located in the centre of Delain and was built along with the rest of the city when King Garmar Contestine needed somewhere to house the survivors of The Great Plague of The Turrigan. Delain is a religiously neutral kingdom wherein all are allowed to practise their faith providing it doesn’t bring harm to others. The Cathedral of Hope is therefore not a shrine to a particular God or Deity, but rather a shrine to Hope, Freedom, Honour and Family. Occasions such as Wedding and Funeral Ceremonies are held in the Cathedral but the focus of these is most certainly on the ideals outlined previously. There is a Priest at the Cathedral and it his role to ensure the building is kept in a high state of repair as well as conduct the various Ceremonies. (The Priest is a NPC) The large, oak doors of the Cathedral are never locked and anyone may seek sanctuary or shelter in the building if they need it. The first room upon entering the Cathedral is the Porch. This is a reasonably-sized room with wooden benches on both sides and a small table in the corner with a chair behind it. Voluntary donations towards the upkeep of the Cathedral may be paid here but they are not essential. There is also a Guest Book on the table which you may sign if you wish. Passing through the double-doors in this room will take you into the main part of the Cathedral itself. Tremendous stone pillars stand proud down the entire length of the Cathedral whilst exquisitely carved oak pews are arranged both sides of the aisle. At the far end of the Cathedral is the Alter. It is here that the bride and groom stand during a Wedding Ceremony. During a Funeral Ceremony a special table is stood vertically before the Alter and it is upon this the coffin is placed. The door to the right of the Alter leads to a small room. It is here that the Priest gets changed into the appropriate attire he needs to wear for each Ceremony. It is also where the Priest will hold confidential meetings between himself and any visitors. The door to the left of the Alter leads to a slightly larger room in which there is a desk and two bookcases. There is also a book lying on the desk. Newly married couples must sign this book to record their mutual consent to the marriage. If the book is not signed by both parties, the marriage is made void. The bookcases contain the records of all deaths, marriages and births in the city of Delain, as well as the dates of all Wedding and Funeral Ceremonies which are held in the Cathedral. In the middle of the left wall of the Cathedral (when facing the Alter) there is an arched doorway. Passing through this will take one to the Hall of Heroes. This is a large, square room with statues of the heroes of the past. (This includes those heroes who lived when The Turrigan was still the homeland of the Contestine Family). On all the walls, behind each statue, is a painting of the hero. Underneath each painting is a stone plate which has written upon it the dates of the hero’s birth and death as well as a list of their most notable heroic deeds. In the middle of the right wall of the Cathedral (when facing the Alter) there is another arched doorway. Through here a short corridor leads you to another set of double doors. It is through these that the well-maintained gardens of the Cathedral can be found. The graveyard, where the family crypts of Delainian Nobility and Royalty can be found, is located on the left side of the Cathedral. After the Funeral Ceremony, the coffin is taken out through the main doors of the Cathedral and brought around to the graveyard via the path which snakes around the building. Fighting is strictly prohibited in the Cathedral and all weapons must be left in the Porch upon entering the building. The Cathedral is also enchanted so that magic may not be used within its walls or gardens with the exception of healing magic. Permanent guards also stand watch over the graveyard and crypts to prevent bodysnatching by necromancers and others. |
