Mabel’s Bakery is a small building off the main street of the Square. Its obscure location means it is one of those ‘hole in the walls’ that only the locals know about. It has a quiet and subdued facade, with only a small sign with eloquent script “Mabel’s” carved into it to resemble icing on a cake. But inside, the air is rich with the aroma of mouthwatering goodness. Mabel and her daughter wake hours before dawn to create all manor of sweets, breads and doughnuts. These little delights are almost like small works of art, each one hand crafted and decorated by women that love to cook.
Mabel and her daughter live above the shop in a humble single room loft. Directly out the back door of the shop is a park, surrounded on all sides by the backs of about 16 other shops. It isn’t a huge area, but it is grassy and pleasant, with a few trees and flowers that the women plant every spring. Many other shopkeeps hold their animals here, so there are chickens, cows, and goats within easy access.

Mabel is a tender and gentle old widow. All she has is her daughter and her shop, and it is all she needs. She truly loves her art, and when she has time she will search the marketplace for new and exciting ways to create the next best cupcake. She is a plump lady, it goes with the territory. And she has a jolly kind disposition, but not to the point that she gives away cookies to street urchins. She knows that if you give to one, they bring their friends, and soon you are living in the street beside them because you are out of business. Mabel has lived a full and rich life, and as such isn’t afraid to tell people what she thinks. And even Lou the Butcher doesn’t intimidate her.
Her only daughter is named Constance and she is likewise pleasant and hard working. She is around 18 and is single, but isn’t looking to settle down right now. Running the shop is demanding, though Mabel does insist that Constance go out with any good looking man that likes cupcakes. If he likes cupcakes, he can’t be bad.
Mabel doesn’t talk about the events that robbed her of her husband and son. Even after nearly a decade, it is a tender subject.
